Conclusions
After interviewing Mr. Loreto and analyzing Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital’s management information system, we have concluded that in order for a hospital to operate smoothly, its MIS must function effectively and efficiently. The Sunrise Clinical Manager system creates a database which handles the patient records. Different departments within the hospital are kept informed of any changes that occur concerning their patients and facilitates in making sure that they are performing their job correctly. The prevention of information silos reduces the time employees would have spent asking other departments questions concerning the patient records. Also, it reduces wasteful recordkeeping by each department because now all the patient records can be accessed and stored in one centralized location.
However, we have also stated that the RWJUH’s management information system is not a perfect system. We discussed how the hospital has only one storage location in Mountain Lakes where all its patient information is stored. The hospital needs additional storage sites in order to ensure that their patient information and data is stored securely and can be easily accessible. The off-site location of the RWJUH’s Information Systems Department can cause conflicts especially when hospital employees have questions and concerns about using the Sunrise Clinical Manager system. Lastly, the hospital is operating with outdated hardware which may not be compatible when subsequent upgrades of the SCM system are performed.
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital will have to make improvements on its information management system if it wants to follow its competitive strategy of being narrowly focused and differentiated. RWJUH has prided itself on providing quality medical care to the state of New Jersey. Its use of its Sunrise Clinical Manager system has allowed the hospital to be successful in delivering on its competitive strategy, however, if it improves upon its capability, we believe that Robert Wood may become one of the nation’s leading providers of quality healthcare services.
